[हिंदी] It is high time to move beyond mere tokenism when we commemorate Mahatma Gandhi, and begin truly embodying Gandhian values in all aspects of our lives. This rallying call was given by Medha Patkar, who is among the most respected development justice activists today. She was among the keynote speakers of the ongoing Valedictory Week to mark 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi being observed from 26 September to 2 October 2020 by The Public India.

องค์การสหประชาชาติ เป็นผู้กำหนดให้ทุกวันที่ 1 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี เป็น “วันผู้สูงอายุสากล” หรือ “International Day of Older Persons” โดยกำหนดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในวันที่ 1 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2534 เพื่อให้เห็นถึงคุณงามความดีของผู้สูงอายุที่สร้างสรรค์สิ่งดีงาม และทำคุณประโยชน์มาค่อนชีวิต โดยให้ความหมายของคำว่า “ผู้สูงอายุ” ว่า คือบุคคลที่มีอายุตั้งแต่ 60 ปี ขึ้นไปทั้งชายและหญิง แบ่งเป็น 2 กลุ่มคือ ผู้สูงอายุตอนต้น คือ บุคคลที่มีอายุ 60-69 ปี ทั้งชายและหญิง และผู้สูงอายุตอนปลาย คือ บุคคลที่มีอายุ 70 ปี ขึ้นไปทั้งชายและหญิง

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the pioneering US Supreme Court Justice (she was the second female justice ever - in US Supreme Court - when she came onboard), and a steely women's rights activist, passed away at the age of 87 on 18 September 2020. Read about her lifetime contribution to make this world a better place by advancing gender equality. Only possible future is a feminist future where all people - all genders - live with solidarity with each other.

Strong unions are pivotal for safety of healthcare workers and patients

In May 2019 all 194 countries that set the agenda of the World Health Organization met at the 72nd World Health Assembly and endorsed the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be marked annually on 17 September. But this year's COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the huge challenges and risks healthcare workers are facing globally including hospital-borne infections, violence, stigma, psychological and emotional disturbances, illness and even death. Furthermore, working in unjust, abusive and stressful environments makes healthcare workers more prone to errors which can lead to patient harm. That is why the theme of 2020 World Patient Safety Day is "Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety."

Ensuring women have a rights-based access to emergency contraceptives is vital

Many women and girls around the world have experienced contraception failure, missed taking oral contraceptive pills, or been forced to have sex against their will. For these women, emergency contraception is a safe and effective method that reduces the risk of pregnancy. Expanding the choices for girls and women to prevent unintended pregnancies, depending upon their specific realities and unique contexts, is critical if we are to deliver on sexual and reproductive health related goals and targets.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility of weak health systems that were ill prepared to withstand the onslaught of the pandemic. As documented by the Pulse survey of the WHO, the pandemic has resulted in disruption of essential health services, including sexual and reproductive health services, in most countries. Weak and perpetually poorly-resourced health systems have escalated the woes of the public, more so in low- and lower-middle income countries. This disaster has reinforced the need for countries to not only increase their public health spending, but also explore innovative ways of financing healthcare systems.
