With support from Oxfam India, Citizen News Service (CNS) team led by Managing Editor Shobha Shukla and Special Correspondent Rahul Kumar Dwivedi, documented the journeys and successes of ten such women farmers who have established their identity as women farmers and enhanced economic leadership of women farmers in different regions of UP state such as Purvanchal, Central UP, Pashchim UP, Ruhelkhand and Bundelkhand.

About 72 per cent population of Uttar Pradesh is involved in agricultural activities and women play a significant role in agriculture. According to Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) only 9 per cent of rural Indian women own land, although nearly 80 per cent contribute as agricultural workers (NSSO, 2011). The agricultural sector is the largest employer of women. A considerably higher proportion of the female workforce compared to males is in agriculture.
