COVID-19 makes the bag of woes heavier for marginalized populations
Agenda 2030 is a commitment by all countries to achieve sustainable
development by 2030 for all, ensuring that no one is left behind,
including marginalised communities like LGBT and sex workers. However,
the stark reality is that, even in normal times, these vulnerable
communities in Asia and the Pacific, often suffer a host of inequities and
discriminatory laws. Grappling with stigma and discrimination, they
often constitute the populations-on-blindspot when it comes to accessing
health services (including sexual and reproductive health services),
livelihood, social security and societal acceptance. COVID-19 pandemic
has exacerbated their situation and driven them to the wall, not just in
terms of their physical vulnerability to the disease but also in terms
of the above factors.

Will Indonesia mitigate COVID-19 by enforcing stronger tobacco control and ratifying global tobacco treaty?
[हिंदी] President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has been sent an appeal to urgently strengthen the response to corona virus disease (COVID-19) in the country, by stronger enforcement of comprehensive and evidence-based tobacco control measures, which includes immediate ratification of the global tobacco treaty (World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control). Studies in various countries globally show that people with pre-existing non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
are more likely to become severely ill or
die from COVID-19. Tobacco use is a common major risk factor of most NCDs.

Sexual and reproductive health services are essential services, including during pandemics like COVID-19
The recently released Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2020 shows that Asia and the Pacific region is not on track to achieve any of the 169 targets of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), including those around ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health services. Despite commitments made by governments, inequality in the region is growing and the economic gains made by it are not translating into poverty reduction and gender equity.
Corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is a grim reminder of what ails one, ails us all
Over a million positive cases of corona virus disease (COVID-19) have been reported worldwide (1,018,150 cases as on 3rd April 2020) with 53,251 untimely deaths. Corona virus disease (COVID-19) was first reported in Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019. Later WHO declared it as a global pandemic. More worrying are warnings from epidemiologists who estimate that the trajectory of corona virus could peak furthermore in several countries in coming weeks/ months.
