70th National conference of TB and chest diseases (NATCON) in Lucknow

70th National Conference of TB and Chest Diseases (NATCON) is being organized by Tuberculosis (TB) Association of India, UP TB Association and Department of Respiratory Medicine, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow during 20-21 February 2016 with day-long pre-conference scientific workshops on 19th February 2016. NATCON has returned to Lucknow after a decade –60th NATCON was hosted in KGMU in 2006.

Professor (Dr) Surya Kant, Head of Respiratory Medicine Department of KGMU and Organizing Secretary of 70th NATCON said: “Over 600 delegates from across the country will be deliberating on issues related to TB and other chest diseases. Latest research updates and vibrant thematic scientific discussions will be key highlights of NATCON. Experts from Central TB Division, Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP), International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), TB Association of India, National College of Chest Physicians (NCCP), Indian Chest Society, Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer among other top leading scientific institutions will be participating in NATCON. This conference will be a milestone learning opportunity for chest physicians from across the country and host several Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions. Uttar Pradesh Medical council has granted 12 credit hours to NATCON delegates, which is the highest-ever in the history of the country.”

On 19th February, 4 pre-conference workshops will be held on tuberculosis (modern diagnostics, RNTCP, multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB); non-invasive ventilation, sleep study (polysomnography) and pulmonary function tests (PFT). Major lung diseases such as TB, asthma, childhood pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), linkages of lung diseases with tobacco use, tobacco cessation, will be some of the important issues in spotlight at NATCON, said Professor (Dr) Surya Kant.

NATCON faculty list includes a galaxy of luminary experts of TB and chest diseases, such as Dr Anant Mohan , AIIMS Delhi; Dr Raja Dhar (Kolkata); Dr Sandeep Salvi, Director of Chest Research Foundation and visiting faculty Imperial College London; Dr Sarabjit Chadha, Project Director, Axshya, The Union; Dr D Behera, former Director of LRS Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Delhi; among others. NATCON will also host several distinguished awards, orations and guest lectures on TB and chest diseases.

“Lucknow being the state capital of UP, is a strategic venue for NATCON. Not only TB rates, but tobacco use, asthma, COPD, childhood pneumonia, sleep disorders, and a range of other chest diseases are at alarming levels. Lot more needs to be done in UP for a well-coordinated lung health programme to effectively prevent and care for TB and chest diseases” said Professor (Dr) Surya Kant, President-elect of Indian Chest Society.
