Safe blood donors are a cornerstone of public health

"Safe blood donors are the cornerstone of a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products" said Dr Dinesh Sharma, honourable Mayor, Lucknow, who was the Chief Guest at the "Blood Drive 2011" organized at Jaipuria Institute of Management in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. Mayor Dr Sharma inaugurated the Blood Drive 2011.

"The safest blood donors are voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors from low-risk populations" said Professor (Dr) Rama Kant, national President-elect, Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) 2012, who was the Guest of Honour at "Blood Drive 2011".

Prof (Dr) Rama Kant is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General’s Awardee 2005 and former Head of Surgery Department at KGMC. Presently he serves as Managing Director of Piles to Smiles Clinics and Director-Professor at SIPS Superspeciality hospital, Lucknow.

Mayor Dr Dinesh Sharma complemented the efforts of students and staff of Jaipuria Institute of Management to mobilize voluntary and safe blood donors, and to raise awareness about blood donation in the community. He particularly commended the laudable enthusiasm among young people to make Blood Drive 2011 a success.

More than 150 volunteers donated blood at the Blood Drive 2011 held in Jaipuria Institute of Management, said the coordinator Vasushena Mishra.

“A pleasant experience during blood donation, good donor care and effective communication between blood centre staff and blood donors are all important factors for the retention of safe blood donors. I hope that a new generation of young, idealistic and motivated voluntary unpaid blood donors will form a pool that provides the safest blood possible for use wherever and whenever it is needed to save life” said Professor (Dr) Rama Kant, who has been the former Chief Medical Superintendent of Gandhi Memorial and Associated Hospitals, KGMC.

“Recruiting and retaining young donors not only improves the long-term safety and sufficiency of a country’s blood supply, but also promotes safe and healthy lifestyles. Young people unable to donate for any reason can volunteer their service as advocates. With young people at Jaipuria Institute of Management playing such a valuable role in helping to secure a safe and adequate blood supply, I am very hopeful a desired change will be seen” said Prof (Dr) Rama Kant.

Professor (Dr) S Chakravarti, Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, presented a plaque of honour to Dr Dinesh Sharma, Chief Guest and Prof (Dr) Rama Kant, Guest of honour and expressed his appreciation for students to enthusiastically mobilize a large number of safe blood donors every year.
